WHY Landscapes?
Landscape structures such as hedgerows, field margins, water bodies or groves are crucial for a functioning ecosystem. They provide habitats, food and refuges for many animals and plants, and connect different habitats with one another.
At the same time, they support important functions for agriculture, such as pollination, natural pest control, erosion protection and water retention.
A structurally rich and well connected landscape promotes biodiversity and ensures stable, sustainable ecosystems.
WHAT is measured?
The structure and connectivity of the landscape are recorded.
For example the size of areas, land use, as well as the diversity and connection of habitats.

HOW is it measured?
Satellite images and drone flights are used for the analysis in order to capture landscape structures over large areas.
In addition, landscape indices are calculated, describing the ecological potential of a landscape by means of a key figure.
Various characteristics of a landscape influence species diversity and are included in the calculation of the index. For example, the size of areas, land use and the connectivity of habitats.
